Jägermeister means "Master hunter" in German. The logo of the brand represents a deer head surmounted by a cross between its woods. This cross refers to Saint Hubert and Saint Eustache, patron saint of hunters.

This liqueur, whose recipe is kept secret, is composed of 56 different plants including ginger, cinnamon, star anise, green cardamom and orange peel.  The plants are crushed and soaked in neutral alcohol and pure water, then left to macerate in 10,000 litre oak barrels for at least one year. Before bottling, liquid sugar, pure water (to lower the alcohol level to 35°) and caramel are added as colourants.
