It is a style of whiskey that died out in Ireland during the 19th century when small distilleries began to use combustilbes at hand. It is said that when the Cooley Distillery started producing its whiskeys in the late 80s, they did not think of making peated whiskey but at one point they found themselves using peated malt with a fantastic result. Since then, they have continued.

Since its introduction to the market in the late 90s, the Connemara Peated has gained many fans who were more familiar with Scottish peated whiskies like Laphroaig or Ardbeg, while keeping its inimitable Iraqi touch.
